Health
Ministry of Christ Church seeks to engage the congregation
in promoting and attaining the optimal state of physical, mental,
emotional, social, and spiritual health and well-being for all
who are connected to the church community. It is composed of
volunteer members of the church who work together to develop
and implement the health ministry program. The Health Ministry
Team encourages congregational and community involvement - utilizing
and sharing resources that promote interdependence among God's
people, along with the practice of good stewardship of body,
mind, and spirit. Members can be identified with gold nametags
on Sunday mornings. Health Ministry meets the third Sunday
of the month at 12:30 pm to plan Health Ministry programs.
The
Parish Nurse is a member of the pastoral care staff
of Christ Church and assists in ministering to the hospitalized
and shut-in members, along with supporting all members in fulfilling
their physical, emotional, and spiritual health potential.

Are You Prepared?
This
is the season for natural disasters. Our media covers stories
on a regular basis about ravaging tornados, devastating thunderstorms,
and floods in our own country. We continue to be reminded
about the unimaginable horror and struggle of the people in
Myanmar after the dreadful cyclone and the heartbreak of the
killer earthquake in China.
Unexpected, natural or man-made disasters can strike anyone
at anytime – bringing misfortune and tragedy. Is it possible
to be prepared for any such disaster? If so, how can that
best be accomplished?
After 9/11, many felt moved to look at disaster possibilities
and preparation in a new way. National security has certainly
changed – but what have the citizens done to change? A recent
Red Cross survey on national preparedness has indicated that
93% of Americans are not prepared for a major calamity – whether
it is a natural disaster, terrorist attack, or pandemic outbreak.
As a Christian and an American, what should we do?
Health Ministry at Christ Church focused the summer of 2006
on a Be Responsible Be Ready program with the goal of heightening
awareness, information sharing, and devising plans for individuals
and families to be prepared. This summer we decided to re-visit
the topic – update and offer a few ideas here and resources
for you to look into further.
Here are a few suggestions to think about and hopefully act
upon:
Remember that knowledge is power. Read, talk with others -
attend community meetings/classes on the topic of emergency
preparedness. Educate your children in a way that they too
can feel involved in preparation.
Act on the knowledge that you gain. Develop a plan and put
it into place concerning emergency preparedness for you and
your family. Assemble a disaster supplies kit. Practice and
maintain your plan. Get involved in community planning – consider
being a volunteer.
Check the
materials in the Here’s to Your Health area of the coffee-hour
room and check the following web sites for more information
to check on your readiness.

May Health Fitness Challenge
Report
Health Ministry’s May Fitness Challenge and Clean Water Project
proved to be a successful event. We are happy to report that
over $ 1,500.00 was collected for the Clean Water Project for
Ethiopia in honor of Pastor Amsalu Gelata. We thank all who
participated in the fitness challenge and raised money, and
those who donated out of love in their hearts. Our donation
will go to the Global Mission and Development Department of
the ELCA for the Admi Tullu Water Supply Project in Ethiopia.
The major objective of this project is to rehabilitate and improve
the community through water provision and sanitation in this
very dry area where people at times have to walk long hours
just to reach a source of water. The planned activities which
include drilling and construction of water ponds, water deflouridation,
roof water harvesting, construction of latrines, and other hygiene
and sanitation projects will be implemented over a period of
three years.
It is our hope that you as well benefited from the Fitness Challenge
and that you have some health related activities planned for
yourself for the summer.
